Living Proof - Lyrics

When we write songs, we offer specific prayers for the lyrics of our songs. We want every word, every syllable to praise Jesus and empower the people who sing and hear them. Writing lyrics is my favorite part of the creative process, and I am so happy with the words we penned for this piece. I've been asked a few times how we write songs in real-time with a group of 3+ people. Sometimes I can't believe it works either because most of the time it feels like I am hanging out with my best friends talking about how cool Jesus is. We all hop on Zoom or Facetime and open a Google Doc that everyone has access to. There are lots of laughs, smiles, tears, and plenty of "awwwww" moments. We usually start with a lyrical hook and a harmonic progression. Next, we pick out a melody for the chorus and write words to fit the melody. When we are happy with the chorus, we move on to the verses in a similar fashion. The bridge comes last. It usually takes us three or four 2-3 hour sessions to finish the lyrics and music for a song. After that, it heads to an arranger to create a track. Most of the time the melody and even the words change again after we have the track back. Sometimes they even change again in the studio! Writing songs is quite the process! We're constantly asking ourselves, "Can we beat that?" It's a lot of write, write, and write it again. I like to compare it to throwing spaghetti at the walls; sometimes you have to throw a lot of ideas out before you find something that "sticks." In the end, we always have pages and pages of ideas that never make the cut, but it is so worth it.

I LOVE the words my team wrote for "Living Proof" so much that I can't quite pick a favorite line. It might be a tie between "My name is on His hands; His name is in my heart" and "With every step and every breath, I wanna live His truth." Do you have a favorite line?
